PhyNexus applies analytical principles to biological problems. It offers validated, accurate, and rugged sample preparation technology and the technology can be scaled as needed. Prior to PhyNexus, Gjerde founded Sarasep, Inc. in 1990. Through Sarasep, Gjerde acquired and developed fundamental DNA separation technology. DNA Chromatography is an advanced liquid chromatographic method for the separation of single strand and double strand DNA. The DNASep™ column became the premier column tool for DNA analysis and purification. This technology became a basis for a new company Transgenomic, Inc. formed by the merger of three companies (Sarasep, Interaction Chromatography, and Cetec Technologies) in 1997. Read More… 

Tiffany Nguyen

Tiffany Nguyen, JD

President

Tiffany Nguyen, JD joined PhyNexus in 2002. Nguyen holds 20 years of legal, corporate, human resources, employment, and intellectual property experience. Prior to joining PhyNexus, she was an Intellectual Property Attorney at Transgenomic, Inc. and involved with patents, trademarks, and contracts in the Legal Department and project management in Research and Development. Before Transgenomic, she worked at IBM Almaden Research Center in the Polymer Dielectric Department and worked as Director of Operations at CTGen. Nguyen received a BS in Chemistry from Santa Clara University. She has also been a member of the State Bar of California since 1997.

Chris Suh

Chris Suh, PhD

Director of Applications & Business Development

Chris Suh, PhD joined the company in 2007. Suh received his BA in Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California at Berkeley and his PhD at University of California at Santa Cruz in the field of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Suh’s dissertation was the identification and characterization of axon guidance molecules in C. elegans. Suh’s current duties include discovering and developing new applications of the PhyTip column platform.

Lee Hoang

Lee Hoang, PhD

Director of Research and Development

Lee Hoang, PhD joined PhyNexus in 2006. Hoang received his BS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University and his PhD from the University of California at Santa Cruz in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. While at Santa Cruz, Hoang studied ribosomal protein and RNA with publications in the field of ribosomal protein function during translation. He also developed a novel mutagenesis and purification which were used internally and later introduced to other research laboratories. Hoang currently manages the entire R&D group, applying a biochemical reductionist’s approach to improving life science research by developing innovative technologies and creative solutions.

Sue Kalman

Sue Kalman, PhD, Registered Patent Agent

Head of Intellectual Property

Sue Kalman, PhD Registered Patent Agent joined the company in 2005 and is responsible for all aspects of the company’s intellectual property including strategic portfolio development, patent drafting, prosecution and appeals, trademarks and outside counsel management. Prior to joining PhyNexus, Kalman worked at Incyte Genomics, Stanford Genome and Technology Center and Sandoz. Kalman is a co-author on “Initial Sequencing and Analysis of the Human Genome” and 17 other peer-reviewed articles including publications in Science, Nature, PNAS in Nature Genetics. She received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis.

Mannix Mendoza

Mannix Mendoza

Director of Manufacturing

Mannix Mendoza joined PhyNexus in 2012 as the Manufacturing Manager. Mr. Mendoza has more than 20 years of manufacturing leadership experience in the medical devices, medical diagnostics and biotechnology industries. Before becoming a part of the PhyNexus team, he was the Manager of Consumables Mfg. at FortéBIO, where he was involved with production scale-up, documentation, inventory management, and the transfer of various manufacturing operations overseas. Prior to that, he was the Sr. Manufacturing Supervisor at Metrika, First Medical, and Amira Medical. Mr. Mendoza received a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Davis in 1992.
